Fellowships for Music Alums, on Each Coast

New York-based composer, bandleader and double bassist Yunior Terry (Music BFA 02) has won one of the two Van Lier Fellowships awarded each year by Meet the Composer. Terry is planning to take this opportunity to compose a body of Cuban “Charanga” dance music and record with his band Son de Altura.

One of his compositions “Tumba Randy” was featured in CalArts Jazz 2000. He plays bass on this track as well. Listen to it below:

In the Bay Area, meanwhile, jazz guitarist Alex Pinto (Music MFA 09) has been named as one of the first six MusicianCorps Fellows to take part in a new “Music Peace Corps” program launched by Music National Service. This program supports music education in underserved public schools and communities. (MusicianCorp is administered by another CalArts alumnus, Robin Sukhadia [Music MFA 07]).

Pinto’s composition “Middle Bank” was featured on this year’s CalArts Jazz CD. Take a listen below.
