Jazz Studies Program Founder Charlie Haden at the LA Phil with Family and Friends

Jazz legend and CalArts’ Jazz Studies Program founder Charlie Haden revisits his bluegrass/country roots tomorrow night (Nov. 17) with an LA Phil concert at Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles. While Haden made a career primarily in jazz–having just received a lifetime achievement award from Bass Player Magazine last month–the iconic double bassist returned to the music of his rural, Midwestern childhood with the release of the Rambling Boy CD in 2008. (It’s also the name of a documentary on Haden, which premiered at REDCAT earlier this year.)

The LA Phil concert reunites Haden with family and friends (the album’s artists) for an evening of live performance. On the bill are Haden’s daughters (the Haden triplets: Tanya, Rachel and Petra); son Josh Haden; wife Ruth Cameron; son-in-law Jack Black; Dan Tyminski, vocals, guitar; Bryan Sutton, guitar; Mark Fain, guitar; Jim Mills, banjo; Sam Bush, mandolin; Stuart Duncan, fiddle and Jerry Douglas, dobro.

The video clip (above) is from a Charlie Haden Family & Friends appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman last year. The song “Spiritual” was written (and sung) by Josh Haden and is on the Rambling Boy album.
