Now in its 24th summer, InnerSpark: the California State Summer School for the Arts (CSSSA) has taken over the CalArts campus. The summer school for high school students, which began on July 10 and will continue until Aug. 6, provides intensive training in music, theater, video and film, visual arts, dance and creative writing. Since its inception in 1987, CSSSA has educated more than 11,000 talented students.

CSSSA often invites guest artists to perform and lecture during the four weeks. 24700 caught one of the music guest lectures given by Carmina Escobar (Music MFA 10), a vocalist and multimedia artist originally from Mexico City. As the Surdna Foundation Distinguished Visiting Artist in Residence, Escobar performed original music and gave a vocal techniques master class.

Escobar has collaborated on many projects which explore a diversity of sonorous languages such as opera, medieval, contemporary, folk, electronic and experimental music.

A video of Escobar's performance and presentation to CSSSA students, held on July 20 at Roy O. Disney Hall at CalArts, has been posted above.
