Seoul Connection: Guest Artist Mike Song Teaches Dance Workshop

Modern dancer and hip-hop choreographer Mike Song, best known for his performances on MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew with his former group Kaba Modern, conducts a CultureHub dance workshop today (Wednesday, April 18) with students at The Seoul Institute of the Arts via telepresence from CalArts’ Main Gallery Conference Room.

With four telepresence studios (Seoul Institute of the Arts, CalArts, La MaMa Experimental Theatre in New York and Contact Theatre in the U.K.), CultureHub strives to incubate creativity through the intersection of art and technology.

During his seminar, Capturing Feeling, Emotion and Character, Song examines the use of these elements to unify audiovisual performance. Participating students in Korea and at CalArts will be asked to “anatomize their interpretation of emotion and character in relation to movement.” Choreography and movement exercises will follow the discussions.

CalArts students are welcome to join the workshop, but are encouraged to RSVP at annie@culturehub.org to ensure space. No previous experience is required, but some dance knowledge is helpful.  Students are advised to warm up before class.

Song has gained worldwide acclaim, not only for dance prowess, but also for his ability to teach across cultures. Most recently, Song has choreographed for the international stage production BLAZE: The Streetdance Sensation, under the direction of Anthony Van Laast (Mamma Mia!, My Fair Lady).

In the video above, Song dances to Skrillex’s “First of the Year,” which is half-choreographed and half-improvised by the performer.
