The Herb Alpert Foundation hosted its annual luncheon for the 2014 recipients of the Herb Alpert Award in the Arts on Friday (May 9) in Santa Monica. The program, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, is administered by CalArts.

This year’s Herb Alpert Award winners are:

• Tap dance choreographer Michelle Dorrance (Dance);
• Experimental documentary film maker Deborah Stratman (Film/Video);
• Composer/avant-garde saxophonist/sound artist Matana Roberts (Music);
• Theater artist Annie Dorsen (Theatre); and
• Post-conceptual artist Daniel Joseph Martinez (Visual Arts).

Each of these risk-taking, mid-career artists receive an unrestricted prize of $75,000 and take part in a CalArts residency program. Working in conjunction with a member of the CalArts faculty, the Alpert Award winners develop and participate in a week-long residency at CalArts during the year of their Award, which may include workshops, productions or concerts, seminars and lectures as well as individual critiques of student work.
