For two consecutive weekends (April 30-May 1 and May 8-9), the Next Dance Company, the Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance's resident ensemble, presents new dance works to the community.
On the program are premieres of pieces by graduating MFA choreographers Jonathan Bryant, Yinuo Song and Sophia Stoller and graduating BFA choreographers Elizabeth Houlton, Yvonne Lacombe, Yanina Orellana and Rebecca Green. Graduating BFA dancers perform all the evening's works.
Bryant and Song's Arise includes a special performance by the CalArts Percussion Ensemble led by The Herb Alpert School of Music at CalArts faculty David Johnson, playing an original score composed by Dance faculty George Gomez-Wheeler.
This year features guest choreographer and founder of Sidra Bell Dance New York Sidra Bell's Beyond the Edge of the Frame, a work commissioned by and created for the New York and Los Angeles-based dance company BODYTRAFFIC in 2012.
The Next Dance Company showcase is directed by Dean Stephan Koplowitz with faculty Laurence Blake. The first weekend's performances are in the Sharon Disney Lund Theater on the CalArts campus and the second weekend's are at Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater (REDCAT).
