2nd Annual CalArts@ Dance Camera West Emerging Artists Competition Winners Announced

Dance Camera West’s 14th Annual Dance Media Festival is in full swing in various locations all over Los Angeles, and CalArts joins the celebration with a screening of the winning films from the 2nd Annual CalArts@ Dance Camera West Emerging Artists Competition at Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater (REDCAT) on Sunday (May 3).

The Emerging Artists Competition recognizes high school and college students who create dance media. The winning college films receive a cash prize and the winning high school film receives a CalArts scholarship prize, pending acceptance to The Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance at CalArts.

This year’s winners are:

  • Kynan Welsh’s METEOR, first place, college category
  • Kym McDaniel’s Groundswell, second place, college category
  • Hannah Kaufman’s Togettotheotherside, first place, high school category
  • Theo Taplitz’s tap tap tap, honorable mention, high school category

Also on the program at REDCAT are the dance films Jiri Kylian: Forgotten Memories, Continuum and Born To Fly: Elizabeth Streb vs. Gravity.

Dance Camera West is a nonprofit organization that seeks to unite Los Angeles’ influential filmmaking community with its local dance populace. Its Annual Dance Media Festival presents a series of live events and more than 30 films that engage with movement and dance to the community.
