Several CalArtians present work in New York Film Festival’s Projections program this weekend. Running from Oct. 4-7, Projections includes an international selection of film and video works that go beyond “traditional” ideas of the moving image.
On Oct. 5 and 7, the festival screens 11 x 14 (1977), CalArts faculty James Benning’s first full-length feature. A travelogue of the Midwestern United States, the 82-minute film is composed of 65 “beautifully framed shots of provincial life and suburban domesticity.” The artist does a Q&A at the festival on Oct. 7.
An Ericka Beckman (Film/Video MFA 76) Program screens on Oct. 6, featuring the CalArts alum’s Cinderella, 1986, and You the Better, 1983. From the NYFF: “Incorporating elements of theater, dance, and performative fantasy, the films of Ericka Beckman are unique documents of the conjoined trajectory of Pop Art and the American avant-garde.”
Program 1: Place Revisited screens short works on Oct. 5 and 6 and includes Valeria Street by CalArts Theater faculty Janie Geiser and Mahogany Too by Akosua Adoma Owusu. Geiser and Owusu join in a Q&A with other filmmakers after the Oct. 5 screening.
Words, Planets by Laida Lertxundi screens on Oct. 6 as part of Program 2: Strategies for Renewal.
The New York Film Festival, presented by the Film Society of Lincoln Center, runs through Oct. 14.
