Eyeworks Festival of Experimental Animation Returns to REDCAT Nov. 3

On Saturday, Nov. 3, the Eyeworks Festival of Experimental Animation returns to REDCAT for the third year in a row.

Founded in 2010 by CalArts Experimental Animation faculty Alexander Stewart and recent guest instructor Lilli Carré, the annual festival – called “essential viewing every year” by CINE-FILE – celebrates abstract animation and unconventional character animation.

And this year, the Eyeworks program includes the work of several CalArtians, including:

  • Ai Can (2018), a documentary portrait of a man suffering from mental illness who never stopped making art by animator and filmmaker Mengxi Yang (Film/Video MFA 20);
  • Donuts (2018), a silent, continuous loop digital video of various donut shops created by filmmaker and former CalArts Experimental Animation faculty Takeshi Murata;
  • Moon Breath Beat (1980), a hand-drawn experimental 2D film – added to the National Film Registry in 2014 – by author, illustrator and animator Lisze Becthold (Film/Video BFA, MFA 76);
  • Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are George (1992) by artist and filmmaker Dan Picard (Film/Video MFA 92);
  • This is Just To Say: A Poem and A Reply (1987) by award-winning filmmaker, artist and Experimental Animation faculty Maureen Selwood.

In addition to the REDCAT event, Eyeworks 2018 will host screenings of their 20-film program in Chicago on Nov. 10 and Brooklyn on Nov. 26. The REDCAT event will also include the first comprehensive screening of internationally-acclaimed animation filmmaker Naoyuki Tsuji’s films in Los Angeles, as well as a discussion and audience Q&A with the filmmaker.
