CalArts Alum Rebecca Lemme Premieres New Dance Work at Cal State Long Beach

On Friday and Saturday, Nov. 16 and 17, California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) presents Fusion – A Collaboration of Dance, Live Orchestra and Chorus at the campus’s Carpenter Performing Arts Center.

The evening features premieres by three Cal State Long Beach faculty choreographers – including CalArtian Rebecca Lemme (Dance MFA 13) – as well as a production of internationally renowned choreographer Mark Morris’ seminal modern dance work, Gloria. Each piece will be accompanied by music from the Bob Cole Conservatory Symphony and CSULB Chamber Choir.

Created in collaboration with fellow CSULB faculty Rebecca Bryant, Lemme debuts a new multimedia dance work set to Aeriality, a contemporary symphony by Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir. Exploring themes of femininity and resistance through human relationships and conceptual re-framings of society, the piece combines rich video imagery with visceral contemporary movement.

Choreographer, dancer, educator and visual artist Lemme’s work has been commissioned and performed around the country. A former CalArts Dance instructor (during her MFA candidacy), she is an Assistant Professor of Dance at CSULB, Artist Director of the performance group Acts of Matter, and teaches extensively in contemporary, ballet and jazz technique.
