The Vinny Golia Large Ensemble to Perform New Music at CalArts

Vinny Golia Rehearsing with the Large Ensemble at CalArts in 2014. | CalArts.

On Saturday (Dec. 8), The Herb Alpert School of Music at CalArts presents The Vinny Golia Large Ensemble, a jazz and contemporary music concert that includes new works by Golia, a world-renowned composer and current CalArts faculty member.

Created by Golia in 1982, the Large Ensemble includes more than 40 musicians and has been described by REDCAT as “a powerhouse of the west coast creative music scene for three decades.”

Many of Golia’s compositions are only performed live once, making each concert a not-to-be-missed musical experience. On the night of the performance at CalArts, Golia will select the set-list at random. Audience members are also invited to come dressed in costume (special prizes will be given to those who do) to celebrate the Halloween-themed suite that is part of the evening’s program.

The Large Ensemble has released a number of critically acclaimed recordings including its first album, Compositions for Large Ensemble and followed by Facts of Their Own Lives, both composed by Golia.
