'Spiel Festival 2010' to kick-off on Aug. 1 outside of Andorf, Austria.
An organic farm, Schlossergütl, in the rolling hills just outside Andorf, Austria, is the pastoral setting for Spiel Festival 2010–a wide-ranging array of traditional and experimental art, dance and music performances–including nearly 40 musicians on four stages. Running through Aug. 8, the festival also features workshops and forums on art, ecology, science and sustainability, as well as an organic food fair.
“Spiel has always emphasized music and dance, and this year will continue in that tradition,” says artistic director and festival co-creator Peter Mayer (Music MFA 09). “But on each night of this year’s festival we’ll also be screening unique, independent films followed by discussions.”
Mayer, along with his two brothers, Simon and Philipp, and the arts and cultural association M-Arts, will host the event, which has evolved over the past few years from a showcase of the three brothers’ work into a diverse art festival. This year’s events will also showcase the work of these CalArts’ 09 graduates from The Herb Alpert School of Music at CalArts: Billy Mark, Jon Armstrong, Oliwa Newell, Kari Rae Seekins, James Cabeza de Vaca, Mae Karthause and Andrew Lessman. Also featured are the works of experimental animator Nandita Kumar (Film/Video MFA 2009) and performer-composer Johnny Chang (Music MFA 2007).
