Combine experimental theater, a drive-in movie and a car wash–then add a few CalArtians into the mix for a mounting of The Car Show at a downtown LA parking lot from Aug. 2-6.
In the production, audience members become voyeurs from their own cars, listening in on a private conversation between a teacher and his underage girlfriend. The two–also in a car–are driving to his house to “consummate their possible affair.” The audience listens to the dialogue by tuning into an FM radio setting while watching the action unfold in the parking lot as well as on projections on screens throughout.
Writer/director Christopher Cole (Theater MFA 10) uses the work to explore ideas about communication, age, power, and taboo relationships. His production company, Thump Thump, creates productions and events tailored specifically to the space and architecture in which they exist.
Joining him in the production of The Car Show are fellow CalArtians: Producer Ian Garrett (Theater MFA 08), management consultant Ashley Walden (Theater MFA 11), video designer Emily Auble (Theater MFA 11), sound designer Martin Gimenez (Theater MFA 09), object consultant DanRae Wilson (Theater MFA 10), actor Vonzell Carter (Theater MFA 09) and original costume construction by Hunter Wells (Theater MFA 10).
