A series of four limited-edition T-shirts have been designed for this weekend’s CalArts’ 40th Alumni Reunion–Tomorrow Started Here. The shirts showcase design and typography from CalArts’ past to help tell the story of the Institute’s evolving identity from the 1960s through the 1990s.

The four designs, which will be sold for $20 each, include:

  • An exuberantly calligraphic “CA” that was used in CalArts promotional materials beginning in 1964;
  • A minimal sans-serif logotype with a bold underlined “s” emphasizing the plural, familiar to anyone who was at CalArts in the ’70s;
  • New wave graphics drawn from catalogs and posters designed by April Greiman in the early ’80s; and
  • Subtly postmodern typography by design faculty member Caryn Aono from the ’90s.

The 40th Alumni Reunion will take place on Saturday (Oct. 9) from 10:30 am-7 pm with a full day of programming. Online registration will be available until tomorrow (Thursday, Oct. 7) at 5 pm. Tickets for alumni are $50 ($75 at the door). Children are welcome. Tickets for attendees ages 6-17 are $15 and children under age 6 are free. The tickets include lunch.

Other CalArts T-shirts, including one featuring the 2001 logotype by alums Sean Adams and Noreen Morioka, and another with an alternative CalArts identity drawn by design faculty member Ed Fella, will be available at the CalArts Store the day of the reunion.

If you’re not able to make it to CalArts this weekend the shirts will be available for purchase at the CalArts Store on campus.
