It may be a little off the beaten path, but a group of California-based artists—including a number of CalArts alumni—take over Tahoe City for Detours 2011.

The two-month long exhibition, which opens with a public reception on Friday, presents a number of site-specific works in the small Northern California town. It’s the first exhibit of its kind to hit Tahoe and environs.

Organized by local Tahoe artist and CalArts’ alumna Jane Jenny (Art BFA 95), with the nonprofit North Tahoe Arts, installations and artwork will be placed in public sites throughout the area, including city streets, sidewalks, gardens, businesses and beaches.

The CalArtians and their projects included in Detour: Tahoe City 2011 are:

  • Faculty member and alumna Karen Atkinson (MFA Art 84) presents Women in Tough Terrain, a series of images created by juxtaposing photos of women of the West (who have a relationship to Tahoe city) against a backdrop of the area’s tourists haunts. They’ll be printed on placemats for use in local restaurants.
  • Donna Brown (Art MFA 11) disperses art for her piece, Passing On the Art: Take Me With You. Brown will insert a one-color silkscreen print (of herself smiling at the viewer) in free magazine/newspaper dispensers throughout the town.
  • CalArts faculty member Connie Hatch‘s photographic installation With or Without will be hung on a fence between Heritage Square and the lake in North Lake Tahoe. The photos consist of historic and contemporary images collected by the artist for several years.
  • CalArts faculty John Hogan (Art/Integrated Media MFA 06) holds Unreliable Guided Tours on Aug. 5-6. The short walking tours will provide “information of dubious legitimacy free of charge.” He’ll be wearing a homemade costume intended to evoke the early 20th-century century garb of Western adventurer Robert Montgomery Watson.
  • And organizer Jenny’s Big Tree>Keep Right installation hopes to turn the “viewer’s attention back to the beauty of the natural world that is so much in evidence around Lake Tahoe by diminishing the distraction of the extraneous, commercial or man-made.”
