Month-Long Nine Winds Residency Features Live L.A. Jazz Every Wednesday

Nine Winds Records has released albums from (clockwise from top left) Walsh Set Trio, The Vinny Golia Sextet, The Daniel Rosenboom Septet and The Vinny Golia Octet.

Nine Winds Records, a record label created in 1977 by multi-instrumentalist, composer, band leader and CalArts faculty Vinny Golia, celebrates it’s 35th anniversary this year.  The label, which has released albums in the genres of new jazz, contemporary classical, and improvised music from the West Coast, has produced over 120 releases known for both “high quality recording values” and “consistently intelligent and adventurous music.” The label has released albums by some of Southern California’s greatest jazz musicians including trumpeter Bobby Bradford, guitarist Nels Cline and trumpeter and CalArts faculty Wadada Leo Smith.

In celebration, the label is hosting a month-long festival at The Blue Whale, located in the Little Tokyo district of Los Angeles. Each Wednesday this month, Nine Winds presents performances by two different bands represented by the label. The festival line-up features recent Nine Winds artists and Golia in bands such as Slumgum, Walsh Set Trio, The Gavin Templeton Quartet, The Daniel Rosenboom Septet, the Vinny Golia Sextet and Medium Ensemble.

“Today, an exciting new jazz scene is forming in Los Angeles with a new breed of artists inspired by the label’s storied history,” says saxophonist Jonathan Armstrong (Music MFA 08), who performs with Slumgum, Daniel Rosenboom Septet, Vinny Golia Sextet and Medium Ensemble.
