Linda Cevallos-French (Dance BFA 89) is set to direct R&B legend Smokey Robinson in his debut performance of Words at the historic El Portal Theater in North Hollywood this weekend (Sept. 21 and 22).

Cevallos-French has choreographed and performed on tour with Robinson—the crooner—for the past 10 years, but in this new production, Robinson explores the power of language in a realm devoid of musical accompaniment.

The evening features storytelling and poetry from the singer that Bob Dylan described as “America’s greatest living poet”—praising the  emotional depth of the lyrics Robinson wrote during his heyday at Motown.

From the El Portal:

Words is a one man show unlike any you’ve ever seen featuring the poetry of Smokey Robinson. Smokey weaves in and out of true life stories, segueing into six masterful poems that he has written about his experiences over the past 50+ years.

Tickets are 50 percent off for all CalArts alumni, students and faculty. For more information, visit the El Portal site and enter the code SUPERSTAR for the discount.
