Five CalArtian filmmakers recently earned nominations for the 2013 Spirit Awards, which will be announced in Santa Monica on Feb. 23.
Presented by Film Independent, a nonprofit arts organization that recognizes and celebrates artist-driven filmmaking, the awards’ winners are chosen by the organization’s members, past Spirit Award nominees and winners, and active Independent Film Project members.

Writer-director Aurora Guerrero’s (MFA 99) coming-of-age story Mosquita y Mari has been nominated for the John Cassavetes Award, which honors feature films created for under $500,000.

David Fenster (MFA 04) received a nod for the Someone to Watch Award for Pincus, which combines storytelling, documentary elements and “metaphysic mystery.”

The teen skater documentary Only the Young, earned festival favorites Jason Tippet (BFA 08) and Elizabeth Mims (BFA 10) a nomination for the Stella Artois Truer Than Fiction Award.

And, up for Best Documentary is Kirby Dick’s (Art BFA 76) The Invisible War, an exposé on the more than half million sexual assaults in the U.S. military.
