Happy Holidays from CalArts

For this year’s annual holiday card, CalArts commissioned a hand-cut silhouette by three of its international students, all in their first year of CalArts’ Program in Character Animation: José Antonio Areán Álvarez (Mexico), Nishant Saldanha (India) and Jacob Winkler (Australia).

The work was inspired by a Fall 2012 silhouette project—a Victorian-era technique—taught by Leo F. Hobaica Jr. in his design and color class.

The art-making in progress was captured by Institute Photographer Scott Groller, and the video’s music—a song called, “My /body (moves)”—was composed by alumna Stephanie Cheng Smith (Music MFA 11).

Season’s greetings from CalArts and the 24700 blog staff. Wishing you the best in 2013!
