School of Theater Students Learn on the Leading Edge of Multimedia Production

Students and professionals at the WATCHOUT workshop this week.

During its interim session this week, the CalArts School of Theater partnered with the Show Sage company to hold a two-day training workshop for both current students and industry professionals on the new WATCHOUT audio-visual production and playback system.

The seminar, made possible by a $25,000 donation of computers and software by Show Sage, taught artists to manipulate and orchestrate stills, animations, graphics, video, sound and live feeds into a single show across multiple visual displays for multimedia presentations, art installations and theater environments.

Last year, then-CalArts students Emilie Sabath (Film/Video, IM MFA 12) and Ray Sun (Theater, IM MFA 12) created Isla—”a three-channel narrative video installation with live performance exploring metaphysics, geologic+emotional time, and possible lost twin souls”—using the system.
