Video: Dance Artist-Choreographer Nora Chipaumire at CalArts

Last month, the renowned New York-based dancer and choreographer Nora Chipaumire visited The Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance at CalArts as a guest artist. The 2012 Alpert Award recipient spent a week on campus, teaching master classes and working with students and faculty.

Scheduled to give a lecture on the first day of her residency (Feb. 11), Chipaumire eschewed the traditional lecture format: She discussed her background as a Zimbabwe-born artist, and her exploration of stereotypes in the movement piece Happy, which she then performed for the students.

We posted video excerpts from her lecture and performance at CalArts, above.

Chipaurmire returns to Los Angeles this weekend as one of the featured speakers at the first TEDxCalArts conference, held on Saturday (March 9) at REDCAT. Titled Body, Performance and Presence, the conference explores how new “understandings of performance and liveness are radically changing our experience of art, technology, culture and politics.”
