There’s still time to catch the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs’ C.O.L.A. Exhibition, which runs until this Sunday (July 7) at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery.
The exhibition honors this year’s recipients of the C.O.L.A. Individual Artist Fellowship Awards, given to mid-career artists living and working in LA. Among the 2013 winners are CalArts alumni Nery Gabriel Lemus (Art MFA 09) and Carole Kim (Film/Video MFA 03) for visual art and design and Malathi Iyengar (Music MFA 99) for performing arts.
In their foreword, Olga Garay-English, executive director of the Department of Cultural Affairs, and Joe Smoke, Grants Administration division director, write:
The artists selected for this honor represent what is unique about L.A.: that we recognize, value, and celebrate innovation and creativity. Together we congratulate this year’s fellowship recipients. Their sensitive approach to the social, political, and intellectual traditions reflected in Los Angeles helps us expand our cultural consciousness. We are fortunate to work with a community of artists whose energy and vision continue to make this collaboration a success.
Rounding out the list of this year’s honorees are Lisa Anne Auerbach, Krysten Cunningham, Samantha Fields, Ramiro Diaz-Granados, Judithe Hernández, Rebeca Méndez, Rebecca Morris and Michael White.
Along with the exhibition, the C.O.L.A. 2013 catalog is available for purchase at the show and is downloadable from the Department of Cultural Affairs website. The catalog, which features the award recipients and their work, was designed by CalArts Program in Graphic Design co-director and Counterspace co-founder Michael Worthington.
