‘Chan and Mann’ Collaborate in New Exhibition at Otis College

Following a year’s worth of preparation, artists and CalArts alumnae Audrey Chan‘s (Art MFA 07) and Elana Mann‘s (Art MFA 07) exhibition, 3 Solo Projects: Audrey Chan, Elana Mann, Chan & Mann, opened in June at Otis College of Art and Design’s Ben Maltz Gallery. The multidisciplinary exhibition, which is on view through Aug. 30, is divided into three equal parts, featuring each artist’s individual work and collaborative artwork they create together under the name Chan & Mann.

The show incorporates video, performance, public engagement, sound, painting, drawing, photography and installation. Chan’s work addresses civic discourse, rhetoric and the feminist construct of the ‘personal is the political’ while Mann’s explores alternative economies, empathetic exchange and the politics of resistance.

Micol Hebron of ArtPulse Magazine recently interviewed Chan and Mann and described their work in a recent article Putting the Words Back into the F-Word:

Chan and Mann’s collaborative work asks important and honest questions about feminism, acknowledges the still prevalent influence of past feminists, and fuels the hope and action of current feminists. Through the production of significant conferences, symposia, and performative events around the country (and soon the world), the duo’s projects boast an inclusive and discursive dialogue.

This exhibition is the third in Otis’ 3 Solo Projects that began in 2004 in an effort to highlight and support new work by Southern California-based artists.

Last year, both artists organized a special session of The Feminist Art Project  at College Art Association Conference 2012.

Below, Chan and Mann narrate a walkthrough of their new exhibition. They also have a companion audio piece of interviews with their parents at 323 Projects that you can hear by calling 323.843.4652 (323.TIE IN LA).
