On Thursday (Oct. 24), the Main Gallery rings with Brazilian music at the CalArts Noon Concert. Ten musicians and singers from Rio de Janeiro, all Community Arts Program (CAP) USA and CAP Rio alumni, will perform original works as well as traditional Brazilian music.
The group of Brazilian students, which includes students from underprivileged communities in Rio de Janeiro as well as selected students from The British School to help with English translations, have been on a tour of the US, performing from Massachusetts to Iowa and finally to California. The Brazilian nonprofit Arts & Social Transformation, led by Wainer and Magui Guimaraes, sponsors the US tour.
The Guimaraes were first introduced to the mission of social change through art when their son Daniel (Art BFA 08) enrolled at CalArts. Inspired by CalArts’ CAP, they founded Arts & Social Transformation in Rio de Janeiro. Since 2009, the organization has been sending five youths per year to the CAP Summer Arts program in Los Angeles.
