On Saturday (June 27), Automata in Chinatown presents Light in the Dark, a one-night mechanical and metaphorical exploration of the camera. The installation includes several CalArtians displaying visual art and leading activities centered around cameras of all kinds.
The free event invites audiences to explore the history, method and magic of cameras and gives them an opportunity to make their own camera obscura, an optical device which projects a received image onto a surface at a 180º angle but with colors and perspective intact, and which was an important predecessor to the modern camera.
Contributing artists to Light in the Dark includes CalArtians Molly Allis (Music-IM MFA 14), Evelyn Ellias (Theater MFA 13), Thadeus Frazier-Reed (Music BFA 05), Alexandra Friedman (Theater MFA 16), Eve Lauryn LaFountain (Art-Film/Video MFA 14), Leah Olbrich (Theater MFA 13), Moira MacDonald (Theater MFA 12), Alexis Macnab (Theater MFA 13), Stephanie Petagno (Theater MFA 15), Deena Selenow (Theater MFA 13) and Amanda Jane Shank (Theater MFA 13), with artists Robin Miller and Narges Norouzi.
