Dance artist and CalArts Faculty Rosanna Gamson and Allison Smartt, assistant technical director in The Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance at CalArts, recently piloted a new course, Metamorposes, during Winter Session. The culmination of the short-term class was Mother Earth, an ensemble-generated piece, performed at CalArts on Jan. 20.
Inspired by specific thematic elements in Tales of Ovid and Ovid’s Metamorphoses, the artists’ statement notes that the performance intended to “create powerful images incorporating women and nature; speak to sexual violence, rape and the current political events while displaying empowered women.”
The performers are: Cat Jackson-Urueña (Dance BFA 19), Odessa Uno (Dance BFA 19), Laura Davich (Dance BFA 20), Audrey Martin (Dance BFA 20), Bel Theobald (Dance BFA 20), Aly Adney-Hernandez (Dance BFA 20), Ashley Sartell (Dance BFA 20) and Makayla Sifuentes (Dance BFA 20).
