On Wednesday, Feb. 7, Art Share L.A. hosts CalArts alumna Odeya Nini (Music MFA 11) and the New York-based, all-women contemporary classical music ensemble The Nouveau Classical Project (NCP) for a night of innovative music at the Downtown Los Angeles venue.

Nini, an LA-based vocalist and composer, has not only performed extensively as a soloist, but also has collaborated with a number of artists, including filmmakers, theater directors, visual artists, dancers, and ensembles such as Meredith Monk, Butch Morris, Lucy & Jorge Orta, wild Up and The Industry.

A Solo Voice, composed and performed by Nini, has evolved over the past several years. From her website:

[The piece] is an investigation of resonance, extended vocal techniques, performance, and pure expression, exploring the relationship between mind and body and the various landscapes it can yield. The work is a series of malleable compositions and improvisations that include field recordings and theatrical elements, aiming to dissociate the voice from its traditional attributes and create a new logic of song that is not only heard but seen through movement and action. In a multi-dimensionality that serves to both provoke and soothe in abstract communication, the voice is presented in its spectrum of natures as it travels through cultures, ages, emotions and colors, like photographs, with tender intimacy and bold aberrance.

The Nouveau Classical Project, an ensemble making headlines for “bringing a refreshing edge to the widely conservative genre” (Vice), showcases new electro-acoustic works and celebrates the marriage of tradition and technology in Currents. The four commissioned works in NCP’s program are Zero Initiative by Olga Bell (formerly of Dirty Projectors and Chairlift), Marina Kifferstein‘s “Missa Prolationum, on a theme by Johannes Ockeghem,” Gabrielle Herbst’s work Where is my voice and Isaac Schankler’s score Artifacts.

Tickets are available online on Brown Paper Tickets or at the door for $20.
