Nominees for the 71st Emmy Awards were announced on Tuesday, July 16, at the Television Academy in North Hollywood, Calif. CalArtians are nominated in numerous categories this year, including Acting, Picture Editing, Lighting Design, Production Design, Sound Editing and Animation.
Award-winning actor Don Cheadle (Theater BFA 86) stars in Black Monday, a comedic chronicle of the 31st anniversary of Wall Street’s worst stock market crash in 1987. His performance as Maurice “Mo” Monroe has earned him a nomination for Best Actor in a Comedy Series. This year’s show marks Cheadle’s eighth Emmy nomination, four of which ran consecutively from 2012 to 2015.
Editor David Armstrong (Film/Video BFA 88) is nominated for an Emmy in Outstanding Picture Editing for a Structured Reality or Competition Program for his work on the Survivor episode “Appearances are Deceiving.” Armstrong is a six-time Emmy Award nominee.
Emmy award-winning lighting designer Robert Barnhart (Theater BFA 87) is nominated for Outstanding Lighting Design/Lighting Direction For A Variety Series for So You Think You Can Dance’s season finale. Lighting directors Daniel Boland (Theater BFA 95) and Johnny Bradley (Theater BFA 07) are also nominees in the same category for their work on the Part 1 episode of The Voice’s Live Finale. Barnhart, Boland and Bradley were also all nominees in the same category for last year’s Emmy Awards.
Art director Gloria Lamb (Theater BFA 06) is nominated for Outstanding Production Design For A Variety Special for her work on The 61st Grammy Awards. Lamb previously earned a Creative Arts Emmy for her work on ABC’s 87th Annual Academy Awards in 2014.
Esteemed Foley artist Gregg Barbanell (Film/Video BFA 77) is a nominee in Outstanding Sound Editing For A Comedy Or Drama Series category for his work on Better Call Saul’s fourth episode “Talk.” Barbanell is an eight-time Emmy nominee, and the winner of the 2014 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Sound Editing for Nonfiction Programming (Single or Multi-Camera).
Visual effects artist Sean Schur (Film/Video BFA 92) is nominated for an Emmy in Outstanding Special Visual Effects for his work on “The White Violin” episode of the Netflix series Umbrella Academy. Schur previously served as the senior digital artist on the Academy Award-winning animated feature Rango (2011).
Pendleton Ward (Film/Video BFA 05) and Cole Sanchez (Film/Video BFA 09) are both nominated in the Outstanding Animated Program category for their work on the “Come Along With Me” episode of Ward’s animated Cartoon Network series Adventure Time. Ward is credited as the episode’s story writer, and Sanchez as its director. Ward has previously garnered Emmy nominations and wins for Adventure Time, including the Emmy for Outstanding Short-Format Animated Program for the episode “Jake The Brick.”
The SpongeBob SquarePants episode “Plankton Paranoia” is up for an Emmy in the Outstanding Short Form Animated Program category. The Nickelodeon series, created by the late animator Stephen Hillenburg (Film/Video MFA 92), has received 18 prior Emmy Award nominations, including four wins. Nickelodeon recently celebrated the beloved sea sponge’s 20th anniversary, which served as a tribute to Hillenburg.
