Women Rising: Celebrating the Women of LA Dance

In honor of the 99th anniversary of the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote, Brockus Project will present Women Rising: Choreography from the Female Perspective on Friday, Aug. 16 at the John Anson Ford Theatre. Ten LA-based dance companies will be paying tribute to the women who pioneered modern dance as well as celebrating the vitality of women-led dance scene in Los Angeles. 

Among the dance companies are Blue13 Dance, BrockusRED, JazzAntiqua, Kitty McNamee, Kybele Dance Theatre, LA Contemporary Dance Company, Luminario Ballet, MashUP Contemporary Dance Company, Rosanna Gamson/World Wide and Sarah Elgart/Arrogant Elbow. Luminario Ballet’s Judith FLEX Helle, a past CalArts guest artist, will be paying tribute to founding dean of the school of dance at CalArts, Bella Lewitzky. 

Other CalArtian participants include Laura Berg (Dance BFA 14), Jinglin Liao (Dance MFA 19) and Stephanie Zaletel (Dance BFA 12), as well as Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance faculty member Rosanna Gamson’s dance company Rosanna Gamson/World Wide (RGWW). Gamson serves as Assistant Dean and Program Director of the MFA in Choreography program at the Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance. Gamson received a National Dance Project Production Grant for Sugar Houses, a dance theater piece set to premiere at REDCAT in 2020, which will explore the story of Hansel & Gretel and historical texts to examine the genre of horror and fairy tales. 

Women Rising will bring together groundbreaking work of Los Angeles-based female choreographers and celebrate the instrumental force of modern dance.
