The 62nd annual Recording Academy Grammy Award nominations were announced this morning (Wednesday, Nov. 20). Several CalArtians are among the extensive list of nominees recognized for their contributions to the music industry.
School of Theater faculty Mara Isaacs and composer and alum Todd Sickafoose (Music MFA 98) are among the producers named in Hadestown’s Best Musical Theater Album nomination. Created by singer-songwriter and playwright Anaïs Mitchell, the mythological musical retells the ancient Greek myth of star-crossed lovers Orpheus and Eurydice. Isaacs and Sickafoose were honored throughout the production’s numerous wins at the 2019 Tony Awards earlier this year.
Composer Julia Wolfe, the 2015 Herb Alpert Award in the Arts winner for Music, is nominated in the Best Contemporary Classical Composition for her work Fire in my Mouth. Commissioned by the New York Philharmonic, Fire in my Mouth is an oratorio for girls’ choir, women’s choir and orchestra inspired by the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in New York City. In March 2016, Wolfe served as an artist-in-residence at CalArts. She is the recipient of a 2014 Pulitzer Prize for her oratorio Anthracite Fields about early 20th century mine workers, as well as a 2016 MacArthur Fellowship.
The 62nd annual Grammy Awards take place on Jan. 26, 2020, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and will be broadcast live on CBS.
