Frozen 2’s successful opening weekend featured a special screening of the film at CalArts’ Bijou Theater on Saturday (Nov. 23) afternoon. CalArts alum Marc Smith (Film/Video 93) returned to campus to introduce the film and hold a Q&A with the students.
Smith, who served as the story director for Frozen 2, worked with the story/storyboarding team to build the vision of returning directors Chris Buck (Film/Video 78), a fellow CalArtian, and Jennifer Lee.
The Walt Disney Animation feature film opened on Friday (Nov. 22) and broke a number of global box office records during its opening weekend. The sequel to the 2013 film about sisters Elsa, Anna and an infinite winter curse, grossed approximately $130 million in North America and $228.2 million internationally, totaling more than $358 million.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, some of the film’s broken records include: Biggest Global Opening of All Time for an Animated Film; Top International Opening of All Time for an Animated Film and Biggest Domestic November Opening for an Animated Film.
Frozen 2’s success marks the second week in a row that a CalArtian helmed the top film at the box office.
