The third and final part of the School of Art MFA 2020 cohort’s postgraduate exhibition, Time is Out of Joint in a Box, offers a variety of limited-edition artwork available for purchase through Saturday, Oct. 31.
ONE TWO THREE is a limited-edition, three-box set produced in conjunction with the exhibition installed at the MAK Center in Los Angeles. Each box responds to the timely questions:
How can art meaningfully touch and transmit during a global pandemic?
How can we experience the multiplicity of narratives that occur through social connection when we must be indefinitely isolated from one another?
Similar to the exhibition’s exploration of altered realities, the boxes transport the exhibition to the viewer, who gets to experience the art from the comfort of their own homes. Each measuring 12” × 9”, the boxes were designed as a “mobile group show” inspired by the Fluxkits and yearboxes of Fluxus artists, as well as painter Marcel Duchamp’s museum in a box, Boîte-en-valise (de ou par Marcel Duchamp ou Rrose Selavy), 1935-41.
The boxes’ edition size is 30+10 artist proofs (APs). Items include limited edition sculptures, performance documentation, textile works, anthotypes, earthenware, collages on paper, as well as printed photographs, zines, maps, and other printed ephemera. The edition contains 28 works by 29 artists, all from the 2020 graduate cohorts in Art, Photography and Media, and Art and Technology. The box set was curated by School of Art faculty Scott Benzel, designed by Ella Gold (Art MFA 19), and produced by Gold, Hannah Rubin (Art MFA 20), and Casey Baden (Art MFA 20).
Works from the two previous Time is Out of Joint exhibitions can be viewed on the official website (part one and part two). Schedule an appointment for an in-person viewing of the Time is Out of Joint exhibition at the Mackey Apartments here.
The ONE TWO THREE boxes are available for purchase individually and as a set. Funds will defray the cost of the art show. Pick them up here.
