Hyperallergic Podcast with Sam Durant

It’s been three years since the public artwork Scaffold by CalArts School of Art faculty Sam Durant ignited a firestorm of controversy and conversation in the artworld.

The sculpture at the Walker Art Center’s gardens in Minneapolis replicated the gallows in which 38 men from the Dakota Native American tribe were executed by hanging in Minnesota, under orders from President Abraham Lincoln in 1862.

Durant’s sculpture was disassembled after discussion between the artist, the leadership of the Walker Art Center, city officials, and a group of Dakota elders following mediation.

On the latest Hyperallergic podcast, Durant and Hrag Vartanian discuss Durant’s recent essay that reveals his perspective and reflections on what happened in 2017.
