Despite the pandemic that has disjointed the traditional “awards” season calendar, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the nominees for the 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards, which are slated to take place on Sunday, Feb. 28. CalArtians were among the nominees and nominated films.
Don Cheadle (Theater BFA 86) was nominated in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series — Musical or Comedy category for his role as Mo Monroe in Showtime’s Black Monday. Set in the 1980s, the show follows a group of underdogs who upset the old boys network, causing the worst stock market crash in the history of Wall Street on Oct. 19, 1987. The series was renewed for a third season in October 2020.
In the Best Motion Picture — Animated category, three films directed by CalArtians received nods: The Croods: A New Age, Soul, and Over the Moon.
DreamWorks’ The Croods: A New Age was directed by Joel Crawford (Film/Video BFA 06). Nicolas Cage and Emma Stone lead the voice cast in which the Croods — the prehistoric family first introduced in the 2013 film The Croods — are challenged by a rival family, who claim to be better and more evolved.
The Disney/Pixar feature Soul was directed by Pete Docter (Film/Video BFA 90) with co-director Kemp Powers. Docter, Powers, and Mike Jones also crafted the story and screenplay about a New York jazz pianist (Jamie Foxx) who finds himself trapped in a strange place between Earth and the afterlife.
Over the Moon (from Netflix / Pearl Studio / Glen Keane Productions) was directed by Glen Keane (Film/Video 74) with co-director John Kahrs. The film is an animated musical in which a girl builds a rocket ship and blasts off in hopes of meeting a mythical moon goddess.
For the first time in its history, the Golden Globes ceremony will be bi-coastal, with Tina Fey hosting at the Rainbow Room in New York and Amy Poehler at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. Nominees will join throughout the evening’s three-hour show from locations across the world. The awards ceremony will air live on NBC on Feb. 8 at 8 pm EST and 5 pm PST.
