CalArtians Nominated for 48th Annie Awards

This morning (March 2), the International Animated Film Association (ASIFA-Hollywood) announced the nominees for the 48th annual Annie Awards. On the shortlist are several CalArtians, including the directors of three out of the five films nominated for Best Feature: Disney/Pixar’s Soul by Pete Docter (Film/Video BFA 90); Dreamworks’ The Croods: A New Age by Joel Crawford (Film/Video BFA 06); and Dreamworks’ Trolls World Tour by Walt Dohrn (Film/Video 96). 

Pixar’s Soul picked up the most Annie Awards nominations with 10 overall. 

Over the Moon (from Netflix / Pearl Studio / Glen Keane Productions) also received several Annie nominations, including Best Direction, Best Music, and Best Writing. The film was directed by Glen Keane (Film/Video 74) with co-director John Kahrs, and also featured the talents of storyboard artist Minkyu Lee (Film/Video BFA 09, MFA 11). 

In the Best Short Subject category is KKUM directed by CalArts alum Kangmin Kim (Film/Video BFA 09, MFA 11) and produced by David Braun (Film/Video BFA 13). The short was independently produced with an $80 dollar micro budget by Kim’s studio Studio Zazac, and Open the Portal, which is helmed by Braun.

Animator, producer, director and CalArts alum Bruce W. Smith (Film/Video BFA 83) will also be honored during the live awards ceremony as a recipient of The Winsor McCay Award, one of the animation industry’s highest honors.

The Annie Award winners will be announced at a virtual ceremony that will be streamed live, courtesy of Variety on Friday, April 16 at 7 pm PST.
