The critically-acclaimed experimental theater company Wooster Group has been around since the mid-seventies captivating audiences with its groundbreaking dance/multimedia-infused productions. The New York group is now in residency at REDCAT to premiere a version of Tennessee Williams’ Vieux Carré. The production, which opened on Dec. 1, runs through Dec. 12.
Wooster’s version of this literary and sexual coming-of-age drama can best be summed up by LA Times theater critic Charles McNulty, who lauds the production in his review of Vieux Carré on Dec. 4:
I’d trade a dozen or so Broadway retreads of Williams’ acknowledged masterpieces for one brilliant production of the erratic Vieux Carré, a play in which the innocent and dissolute sides of Williams’ sensibility confront each other. I’m not sure if any traditional staging could sort out the work’s tonal shifts, the lurches from grotesque comedy to autumnal pathos, from bone-chilling loneliness to ribald sleaze. But the Wooster Group’s patently unorthodox approach will be hard to beat.
