Twenty-six California graphic designers have been tapped to reinvent the alphabet for the Pasadena Museum of California Art’s (PCMA) latest exhibition, Getting Upper: Graphic Designers and Artists Reconsider the Alphabet, on view from May 15-Sept. 4.

The show features screen printed posters by some of the state’s most accomplished graphic designers, and includes a number of CalArtians: faculty members Michael Worthington (co-director of the Graphic Design Program at CalArts), Gail Swanlund and Caryn Aono; as well as alumni Denise Gonzales Crisp (Art MFA 96), Katie Hanburger (Art MFA 06), Jon Sueda (Art MFA 02), Kali Nakitas (Art MFA 90) and Snow Kahn (Art MFA 98).

Curator Amos Klausner asked the 26 designers to re-imagine a letter from the alphabet, using graffiti and street art as an inspiration.

The result is an alphabet that reconsiders our collective understanding of what a letter can be and how it functions to create language and meaning.

A limited run of 100 silk-screened posters has been printed for each letter.

The opening reception for the exhibition will be held at PCMA on Saturday (May 14) from 7-10 pm.
