Nontraditional graduation ceremonies are part of CalArts tradition. The formalities of a cap, gown and mortarboard are eschewed, and graduates, family and friends can count on a surprise—or two. At last year’s graduation, two School of Art students were married by Art Dean Tom Lawson. This year, the School of Art gave a ukulele and vocal rendition of a Cher song. We posted the video, above.
Other graduation interludes included a dance piece, choreographed and performed by CalArts’ alumna and staff member Zari Wigfall (Dance BFA 03), to honor dance artist and educator Donald McKayle, an honorary degree recipient, and the welcoming of parents and guests by CalArts’ Gamelan ensemble.
