Avenue 50 Studio, a nonprofit art gallery in LA’s Highland Park neighborhood, is holding a closing reception for its August exhibitions, which include artist and CalArts’ alumnus Ismael de Anda III’s (Art MFA 00) installation Fortress of Solitude/Flux Ultralux.
The work fuses images from the artist’s journeys throughout the Southwestern United States, Northern Mexico and his recent travels in Japan.
From Avenue 50 Studio:
De Anda draws on a re-constructed memory of visiting the “strategy room” from the Quinta Luz Museum, the former home and headquarters of Pancho Villa. De Anda remembers [it] as an intimate room covered with wall paintings as a means of inspiring the revolutionary, as well as a material depiction of one’s inner mind and heart. De Anda’s composite landscape of memories also re-mixes childhood experiences, Asian textile designs, and interpretive inspiration from Japanese Obon, a time when spirits of the past are supposed to revisit households.
De Anda will be holding an informal walkthrough of the installation at 2 pm.
Also closing that day in the Studio’s Main Gallery is GANAS 2020 featuring works of stencil, collage on canvas, and rubyliths by artist Ernesto Yerena.
