Writer and critic Ernest Hardy launches the Aesthetics & Politics Fall 2011 Lecture Series tonight in CalArts’ Langley Hall with his talk, “Post Post-Blackness/Queerness in the Visionary 90s.”
The LA-based Hardy writes critical essays that largely focus on film and music, for outlets such as Los Angeles Times, Vibe, The New York Times, Rolling Stone, the Source, Millennium Film Journal, Flaunt. Hardy’s first collection of criticism, Blood Beats: Vol. 1, won a 2007 PEN/Beyond Margins Award. Blood Beats: Vol. 2, was published February 2008.
Hosted and curated by CalArts’ School of Critical Studies faculty member Douglas Kearney, the Aesthetics & Politics Lecture Series focuses on the sometimes controversial concepts of “post-blackness” and “post-race” that have become part of art discussions and public discourse at large—especially during Barack Obama’s presidency. Through the series, the Aesthetics & Politics program hopes to explore the meaning of these concepts as well as related notions of “post-gender, post-humanity and even the posthumous.”
