Fourteen CalArtians from the MFA Writing Program are presenting literary works and taking part in panel discussions at the 2011 edition of the &Now Festival of New Writing at UC San Diego this week.
&NOW is a biennial traveling festival and conference that celebrates innovative writing—“literary art as it is practiced today by authors who consciously treat their work as a process that is aware of its own literary and extra-literary history, that is as much about its form and materials, language, communities, and practice as it is about its subject matter.” This year’s program, entitled “Tomorrowland Forever,” begins on Thursday and runs through Saturday (Oct. 13–15).
Five Writing Program faculty members, eight alumni and one current MFA candidate are set to make presentations on panels, conduct readings and even showcase multimedia pieces. The “Tomorrowland Forever” theme explores literary artistic and critical works that “circle ideas of innovation, experimentation, newness and not-yetness.”

&NOW is a festival of fiction, poetry, and staged play readings; literary rituals, performance pieces (digital, sound, and otherwise), electronic and multimedia projects; and intergenre literary work of all kinds, including criti-fictional presentations and creatively critical papers. We particularly encourage pieces that promote linguistic and genre transgressions, along with literary artworks that promote interdisciplinary explorations and conversations with past, present, or future literary concerns and movements.
Participating CalArts faculty members include Tisa Bryant, Jen Hofer, Matias Viegener, Jon Wagner and Christine Wertheim. Also on the program are Writing Program alumni Harold Abramowitz (MFA 06), Flint (MFA 09), Eric Lindley (MFA 08), Janice Lee (MFA 08), Joe Milazzo (MFA 09), Robin Myrick (MFA 08), Mathew Timmons (MFA 05), and Laura Vena (09), and second-year MFA student Tracy Jeanne Rosenthal.
