Concord, a newly christened art space in the Cypress Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, holds an opening reception for its first show—Do We Surf The Wake?—tonight (Oct. 14) from 7-10 pm.
The art space is the brainchild of three CalArts’ alumni: Arjuna Neuman (Art MFA 11), Kean O’Brien (Art MFA 11) and Marco Di Dominico (Critical Studies MFA 11) as well as architect Car Martin.
Curated by Neuman, Do We Surf The Wake? features new work by Ramak Fazel (Art MFA 11), Yung Jake, current Aesthetics & Politics student Jumana Manna, Michala Paludan (aka Michala Nautrup-Hansen, Art MFA 11), Amy Howden-Chapman (Art MFA 11), Andy Robert (Art MFA) and Sean Snyder.
More about the show from concordspace.com:
Do we surf the wake? re-reads the Birth of the LA Art Scene and our local history through the notion of communities of difference. The curatorial impulse follows suit, by presenting artists that identify both with Los Angeles and its art history, as well as places more further afield including Palestine, Iran, Denmark, New Zealand, Haiti and the Ukraine.
The artist-run space is designed as a gallery for readings, screenings and experimental exhibitions, but there’s also a community outreach arm of the project. Neuman says that they’re currently devising a curriculum for a booth at the Eagle Rock Farmers and Artisans Market to host various workshops and programs through the end of the year, from mask making to seed planting.
