CalArts’ hallways were adorned in silhouette last week with works created by students in Leo Hobaica Jr.‘s Color and Design I class.
The class, which is required for all Character Animation students, is a traditional course in both skill building and experimental technique, according to Hobaica, assistant dean of the School of Film/Video at CalArts.
This year, he added a twist to the annual project: Each silhouette had to explore the scale and relationship to the environment, much in the way that street artists like Banksy approach their large-sized works. Many of the silhouettes turned out to be both bigger than in past years and site-specific.
Hobaica, who began teaching at CalArts in 1996, says that the project challenged his students and his own curriculum. He even took on his own assignment and contributed a piece (that traversed two floors) to the installation.
