Part of Pacific Standard Time, the series of exhibitions initiated by the Getty and presented at 60 venues throughout Los Angeles, Under the Black Sun: California Art 1974-1981 is currently on view at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA).
More than 500 art objects representing the work of more than 130 artists–many of them alumni of the Chouinard Art Institute and CalArts’ School of Art–are organized thematically to reflect the seemingly boundless range of strategies explored in this extraordinarily rich period of art history. The range of media exhibited includes photography, painting, sculpture, installation and environment; performance and public demonstration, film and video, zines and posters; ceramics and models; works on paper; craft and design objects; and ephemera.
From MOCA’s website:
…The pioneering California artists featured in this exhibition created new forms by borrowing from old modes and incorporating new materials and technologies, ensuring that what historically had been divided became entangled, with no single style prevailing. Ultimately, what cohered as postmodernism during the 1980s effectively codified ideas and concepts evolving from art made in California by these artists and their peers.”
Among those artists are Chouinard and CalArts alumni Llyn Foulkes (Chou 59) Jack Goldstein (Art MFA 72), Mike Kelley (Art MFA 78), Suzanne Lacy Art (Art MFA 73), Susan Mogul (Art 73), Matt Mullican (Art YR), Allen Ruppersberg (Chou 67), Edward Ruscha (Chou 60), James Welling (Art MFA 74, BFA 72) and Christopher Williams (Art MFA 81 BFA 79).
