There’s more to Indian film than Bollywood offerings, and Tuesday (March 20) filmmaker and curator Shai Heredia brings a slate of varied, experimental short films from India to the Structuring Strategies screening series at CalArts’ Bijou Auditorium.
The selection of films and videos examines aesthetic and socio-political complexities of experimental filmmaking in India and features animation, found footage and stylized montage from the late 60’s and early 70‘s.
Also included in the program are more recent innovations in experimental narrative and documentary, including Natasha Mendonca’s (Film/Video MFA 10) CalArts thesis film, Jan Villa, which won the Tiger Award at the 2011 Rotterdam International Film Festival. The film is a tapestry of images that captures the impact of the 2005 monsoon floods that ravaged the post-colonial metropolis of Mumbai.
Heredia, founder of Experimenta, the international festival for experimental cinema in India, has curated film programs for major film and art venues around the globe, including the Tate Modern, Berlinale Film Festival and the Images Festival in Toronto.
Her latest film, I Am Micro, co-directed with Shumona Goel, is currently screening as part of the exhibition Being Singular Plural at the Guggenheim Museum in New York through June 6.
