L.A. Weekly‘s 33rd Annual Theater Awards took place on Monday night (April 2) at the Avalon in Hollywood. The awards, which honor the best of LA theater on the small stage during 2011, were judged by local theater critics.
This year, CalArts faculty member and director Bart DeLorenzo won Best Comedy Direction for his work on Day Drinkers. Justin Tanner’s critically acclaimed play, which starred True Blood actor Todd Lowe, focused on the “perils of passion under the influence.”
DeLorenzo, who directed last fall’s boxing production In the Jungle of Cities at CalArts, also received a second nomination in the Comedy Direction category for Margo Veil—the production that eventually won Best Comedy Ensemble.
DeLorenzo has previously received five LA Weekly Theater Awards for Direction and Production as well as three Back Stage Garlands for Production, Adaptation and ‘Local Hero’ Director.
