The LA Phil’s three-week West Coast Left Coast music festival–which celebrates the spirit of “California’s creative rebels”–begins this weekend. Curated by Creative Chair John Adams and Music Director Gustavo Dudamel, the festival explores the vast numbers of musical genres and styles that flourish on the West Coast, particularly in California.
The festival officially opens on Saturday (Nov. 21) with performances by the Kronos Quartet, minimalism master Terry Riley, electronica by Matmos and “psycho-musicologist” Mike Einziger from the band Incubus.
A number of CalArtians are also participating in the festival:
- The Los Angeles Master Chorale spotlights music of four left coast composers, and will premiere the piece “Savage Altars” by Ingram Marshall (Music MFA 71) on Nov. 22.
- Susan Svrcek (Music MFA 73) will perform Piano Spheres: California Keyboard with music faculty Vicki Ray and former music faculty member Mark Robson at the LA Phil on Nov. 29. One of the pieces they will perform is “Queen of Spain,” a composition by CalArts faculty member and alum Arthur Jarvinen (Music MFA 81).
- Noah Harmon (Music BFA 05) plays bass for the LA-based Airborne Toxic Event. The band plays at the Walt Disney Concert Hall on Dec. 4 with the Calder Quartet. (See video above.)
