Last month, artist Shirley Tse—co-director for the Program in Art at CalArts and recently named California Community Foundation fellow—led a group of 13 students from the School of Art to Braunschweig University of Art in Germany, for an exchange exhibition.
The CalArts contingent mounted the show Artists as Travellers at Galerie der HBK from July 10-15 during the university’s rundgang (open studios). Participating artists were: Shagha Ariannia (Art MFA 12), Larissa Brantner James (Art MFA 12), Johanna Breiding (Art MFA 12), Heisue Chung (Art MFA 13), Malene Dam (Art MFA 12), Cody Edison (Art BFA 12), Tyler Matthew Oyer (Art MFA 12), Minha Park (Art MFA 13), Sarah Petersen (Art MFA 12), Mary Rasmussen (Art MFA 12), Kari Reardon (Art MFA 12), Benjamin Tong (Art MFA 12) and Bedros Yeretzian (Art BFA 14).
The exhibition also included works by Tse and fellow CalArts faculty member Kaucyila Brooke.
In a continuation of the exchange program, a group of students from Braunschweig will visit CalArts in November, opening their own show in the Institute’s D301 gallery.
To help fund the exhibition, Tse received a grant from DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), a publicly funded independent organization of higher-education institutions in Germany and a grant from the CalArts Office of the Provost.
