Earlier this month, artist and CalArts faculty member David P. Earle began a residency at Side Street Projects, an organization temporarily located in a vacant 25,000 square-foot lot in Pasadena. Funded in part by the city of Pasadena, the project provides artists access to solar-powered trailers to make work that engages the community.
While onsite on Thursdays and Saturdays this month, Earle hand-cut intricate wooden collages, which visitors were invited to disassemble and reassemble to create their own unique forms. The resulting two-dimensional collaborative “sculptures” have been photographed and collected in a limited-edition exhibition book.
On Saturday (Dec. 1), the culmination of Earle’s residency, titled Triple Play, takes place at Side Street Projects with a reception and book release event.
Earle, who serves as an adjunct faculty member in the School of Critical Studies at CalArts, works in a variety of media including drawing, collage, woodcutting, sound and film. He recently curated and edited The Open Daybook, a perpetual calendar featuring the work of 365 contemporary artists, which was published in book form by Mark Batty Publisher (Random House) in 2010.
The last chance to meet with Earle during an Open Studio at Side Street Projects is Thursday (Nov. 30) from 10 am to 5 pm.
Fellow CalArtian Elana Mann (Art MFA 07) is scheduled for a Side Street Projects residency in April and May 2013.
The gallery above features pieces created during Earle’s residency.
