A preview of the video art and music from the ‘Dream of a Fixed Escape’ performance on Saturday
CalArts performers and artists are involved in quite a few happenings around Los Angeles. Here’s a quick roundup of some of the events.

wild Up: Art. Music.
A sneak preview of ‘Museum Meets Orchestra,’ featuring wild Up
For the its last concert as Orchestra in Residence at the Hammer Museum, wild Up, an LA-based experimental classical/contemporary ensemble, presents music at the intersection of physical art and music in a “roaming concert” throughout the museum, with works that react to different art and spaces. Also on the program are older pieces rearranged by wild Up composers for the museum. More from the wild Up’s website:
We’re interested in the studio practice, post-studio practice, and ideas of what makes art in a museum different from art in a concert hall, temporal or otherwise. We’re playing music by and inspired by art — we’re going to saturate the museum in sound with commissions written specifically for spaces at the Hammer.
The program includes commissions by Colin Wambsgans (Music MFA 11), Odeya Nini (Music MFA 11), Archie Carey (Music MFA 11), Chris Votek (Music BFA 08), Colin Woodford (Music MFA 10), Cory Fogel (Music MFA 04), Bobby Halvorson (Music DMA 13, MFA 10) as well as arrangements of Morton Feldman, Anton Webern, Ottorino Respighi and Antony and the Johnsons.

Galaxy: Art.Science.Party
cARTel: Collaborative Arts LA hosts a space-themed winter art show in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday. Described as “an interactive cosmic playground party,” the event features commissions by 15 artists, musicians, and technological luminaries, as well as a chat with science icon, Bill Nye. Among the artists in the exhibition is scenic designer Alex Gaines (Theater/IM MFA 12), who is featured in the video above. The event also includes live music, food and libations.

Dream of a Fixed Escape

Choreographer Cherise Richards (Dance MFA 13), composer Brendan Byrnes (Music MFA 12) and video artist Kerstin Hovland (Film/Video MFA 12) present an evening of dance, live music and video at Live Arts Los Angeles. The recently opened Eagle Rock dance and performance venue, which is co-owned by alumna Karen Quick (Dance 90) and Jennifer Vaughn, premieres the new work, Dream of a Fixed Escape. As the title suggests, the production revolves around “modern day forms of escapism and how we condition ourselves to dissociate, fantasize, project and avert.”
Richards, and her dance group, Riptide Dance, has enlisted dancers Chelsea Yarnell (Dance BFA 12), Jordan Saenz (Dance BFA 12), Mark Stuver and Stephanie Zaletel (Dance BFA 12) for the performance. In addition to Byrnes on microtonal guitar and laptop, the music features Emi Tamura (Music MFA 11) on synth / prepared violin, School of Film/Video faculty member Gordon Kurowski on theremin and tenor sax and Michael Day (Music MFA 14) on prepared turntables and percussion.

Corpse Bludgeon
The video above explains Corpse Bludgeon.
Also at 8 pm, an interactive game conceived by artists Scott Cazan (Music MFA 09) and Jordan Bartee (Music MFA 09), Corpse Bludgeon, will be installed at Betalevel in Chinatown. Created with the help of collaborators Casey Anderson (Music MFA 09), Jason Brown (Critical Studies, Integrated Media MFA 00) and Ian Besler, the game allows participants to “bludgeon” a corpse in order to collect points.
According to Betalevel’s website:
- There will be one or many Corpses.
- There will be Blunt Objects.
- You will sign the Waiver.
- You will be strapped in to the Biomechanical Receptors.
- You will Bludgeon Corpses.
- The Results will be Tallied.

Mulholland Dérive

Between 12-6 pm, LA Road Concerts returns to the entire length of Mulholland Drive in Los Angeles. The annual event features site-specific installations and performances by more than 100 LA-based artists who reinterpret unused outdoor public spaces along the entire length of one of LA’s streets. With the success off last year’s Sunset Boulevard concerts, event organizer, alumnus Stephen van Dyck (Music/IM MFA 09) returns with a set of new artists and projects.
